Legalization is sweeping the nation—it started with Washington and Colorado but has quickly picked up speed from sea to shining sea. Supporting legalization means supporting criminal justice reform, progressive economic reform, civil liberties along with cannabis use. It may be difficult to know how to best support these causes, so here are the five of the easiest ways to support legalization movements in the United State

1. Attend Cannabis Events

No matter where you live, there is a cannabis group or non-profit in your area. These groups will usually coordinate 4/20 events, protests and marches along with more frequent meetings which will specifically outline the needs of the area. These big events, like 4/20, showcase the cannabis community and attendance helps in legitimizing the cause.

2.Visit a Legalized City

If Denver or Seattle is within range of you, pop in for a visit! Legalized cannabis has allowed for tourists to buy and consume cannabis, thus contributing to the local businesses and state. Interest in these cities will show that legalization has the potential for increased tourism along with cash flow.

3  Donate to NORML

NORML was founded in 1970 and has since been fighting for the millions of Americans who smoke cannabis responsibly. Over the years they have been lobbying state and federal legislature and currently serve as a respective informational source for media. NORML’s mission statement is to move public opinion sufficiently to legalize marijuana for adults and serve as an advocate for consumers to assure they have access to high quality marijuana that is safe, convenient and affordable. Donating to them will allow them to continue their efforts to fight for you and your rights.

4 Support Cannabis Friendly Politicians

In 2015, finding politicians who support the reform of cannabis laws is getting easier. Most of the politicians in states with legalized marijuana very much agree with the reform and keeping them in office will be pivotal to progressing reform. However, there are many other notable public servants—in both parties—who have expressed interest in legalization including John McCain (R-AZ), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Peter Shumlin (D-VT).

5 Vote!

When a ballot initiative is introduced in your state, use the power of democracy to make a change! Every vote counts, so make sure you are registered to vote—yours could make the difference.

Supporting the legalization movement doesn’t necessarily mean giving enormous sums of money to political parties or other pro-legalization groups. Yes, money can move mountains, but most of the time it is simply about showing support to those who are taking steps already.
