No dispensaries can match the size and volume of a Whole Foods supermarket, but plenty can rival the natural grocer’s profit margins.

Based yearly total sales per square foot, the average medical marijuana or retail dispensary outsells a typical Whole Foods shop. Dispensaries average $974 per square foot while Whole Foods check in just below at $930 per square foot:

There are many factors that contribute to the discrepancy, but the main one is that Whole Foods are a lot bigger than dispensaries in both size and product. When there are hundreds of products taking up thousand of square footage compared to a couple dozen products in a small shop, revenue numbers per square foot will likewise differ.
