If you are a supporter of the cannabis movement, then the number 6630507 is one you should commit to memory. This number is the identification number for the patent the US Government holds on the therapeutic benefits of cannabis. Yes, you read that correctly, therapeutic benefits.
This may be somewhat shocking to you, especially if have the recent news from the DEA fresh in your memory. For those who don’t already know, the DEA just reaffirmed their position that cannabis has no acceptable medical value by its continued listing as Schedule I substance.
Clearly US Patient # 6,630,507 and a Schedule I classification should be mutually exclusive, meaning if one exists the other should not.
The abstract of this patent reads, “cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia.”
This patent was filed for by the US Department of Health and Human Services in 1999, and officially granted in 2003. In my mind, if the US Government owns it, then we as US citizens all share ownership.
Our Federal tax dollars paid for the research which produced the scientific understanding captured in this patent.
In response to this travesty of logic Amy Hilterbran, a medical cannabis advocate, started a sweeping trend on social media of posting a picture showing your hand with the patent ID number written on it in ink.
Major names have also spoken on the obvious irony of the Federal Government seeming to hold two opinions at once. CNN chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta questioned, “”How can the government deny the benefits of medical marijuana even as it holds a patent for those very same benefits?”
That is a good question that many in this world want to know the answer to.
Do you think the Federal Government should acknowledge the irony of owning a patent for medical benefits while simultaneously qualifying there is no medical value? Tell us what you think in the comments below or on Facebook! Post your hand with 6630507 written on it to our Facebook page!
